Mumbai could soon have a dedicated berthing facility for private yachts, speedboats, and leisure vessels, as the Maharashtra Maritime Corporation begins work on a project for a floating jetty and marina at Nariman Point.
The program is being promoted by Ports and Fisheries Minister Nitesh Rane as part of the state’s larger goal to transform Mumbai into a worldwide maritime tourism destination. The proposed facility is also expected to alleviate the city’s lack of specialized marina facilities for private boats.
Currently, jetties around the Gateway of India serve a variety of activities, including passenger movement, tourism operations, and private boats. The overlapping use has caused congestion and operational issues, notably for boat owners and operators.
Marina to offer more than berthing.
The Nariman Point plan is expected to feature amenities beyond boat berthing. According to reports, the plans include a yacht club, restaurant, café, exhibition and seminar facilities, and other tourist-friendly amenities.
The project is anticipated to be constructed as a public-private partnership. Preliminary estimates indicate that the marine component will cost around Rs 243 crore, while land-based infrastructure will cost around ₹15 crore.
The state government is also anticipated to relocate its ministry offices to the adjoining Air India facility, emphasizing the strategic significance of the Nariman Point site.
The proposal has been considered earlier.
The concept of building a marina in the Nariman Point location is not new. A jetty project at the National Center for the Performing Arts (NCPA) has previously been included in investment proposals under the Centre’s Sagarmala program.
Mumbai’s updated Development Plan also includes a marina on the Nariman Point-Cuffe Parade waterfront.
Before it can be implemented, the proposed project must go through rigorous studies that include environmental clearances, Coastal Regulation Zone (CRZ) rules, traffic effect, coastal safety, and public access. The Maharashtra Maritime Corporation is looking into these needs as part of its project planning process.
Potential Improvements to Water Connectivity
The proposed marina could make it easier for private boat owners to cruise to areas like Alibaug, Rewas-Mandwa, and Uran, thus making sea-based travel more accessible from South Mumbai.
The initiative also contributes to Maharashtra’s larger efforts to improve water transportation in Mumbai. A study is in underway to investigate potential water-based connections between many areas along the city’s western coastline, notably Nariman Point.
If the necessary technical studies and clearances are obtained, the floating jetty might offer a new layer to Mumbai’s waterfront infrastructure by combining marine tourism, private boating, and increased water connectivity.
For a city with a long coastline but minimal dedicated marina infrastructure, the Nariman Point concept might be a significant step toward establishing a more organized and modern recreational boating habitat.
